Hi everyone, finally bought points :p

Hi everyone,
I am attempting the Mclaren tutorial and will need help and your guidance througout :p I have always wanted to make a realistic car and have tried with nurbs and got pretty far then got lost. I have never done spline modeling before so I hope its easy to follow. Here is the free tutorial part. How do i get my user interface the same as Philip's ? My Numeric thing floats Now on to the splines :) |
The way I matched my screen to Phillip's (with the numeric and layer windows on the side) was to size down the size of the lightwave window (instead of having it full-screen, then place and size my other windows as necessary... if you close LightWave after you do this, it should save these positions. By the way, welcome! :)

Thanks Leroy3rd :)
Here is what I'm at from the end of the first tutorial. So far so good :) Hows it? C&C please |
thats the stuff mate! good start
I hear great things about this tutorial so Im sure you will learn loads |

Yep, learning alot already :)
Just did tutorial 2, woah the rear part was the hardest, might have to redo it over since lots of time the blueprint didn't match all views. |
Hi welcome I hope you enjoy this tutorial as much as I do. You have a great start there, nice spline cage. I also notice that my blueprints dont match exactly all the time but dont worry to much just keep it close.
|
Yep, blueprints not matching perfectly is a constant problem - no matter what you're modelling. Still, since we're not working in a CAD package, precise measurements don't matter too much, so just eyeball it - if it looks right, then it pobably is right :)
You've made a great start on that so far already. The only advice I can give you at the moment here is just to make sure that you've got each section right before moving on - and make sure to save (as different files) on a regular basis. |

Having some patching problems.
All the edges are welded, but I still can't patch it. I get curves do not cross correctly. |
Since you've checked that all the points at the patch corners are welded correctly, the next thing to look at is the direction of the curves. Try flipping your curves one by one to see if that makes a difference.
|
Thanks didn;t know flipping on a curve would effect, will try now :)

Ah found the problem, I sometimes used the polygon instead of control + p spline poly, fixed the bottom part.
This is awesome! End of Tut 3 onto 4 :) |
cool mate :)
1 thing: if you could make you screenshots a little smaller it would be great thx man and great start |
Hey everyone, took a day of break.
Here is end of tut 4. Im surprised it came out pretty good, my wire is so messy :/ Kevin is this better? Hmm still quite big in the width. Here goes again |

Got Stuck on Tutorial 5
Don't know why I can't patch them. All points are welded too What should I do? |

Found out I had 4 polys in one line, deleted it and remade the spline and it worked :)
Now having some trouble with the Rear again, this line is noticable, what should I do to smooth it out? My wire is 10x messy :/ |
From here, it looks as if you've got a point which has too many lines coming off it - in other words there are too many polygons attached to that one point. As to what to do about it, I think I'll need to see the wireframe before I can really say...
|
Before you do actually start messing with the mesh though, take it across to Layout and do a quick test render of that section - it may not actaully be noticible in the final images...

Thanks dudes :)
Heres the wire, its messy |
Hey, this is looking nice. Once you make one car, you'll learn from your mistakes and new things you find and you'll be a lot quicker and more efficient next time. Keep going, it's looking cool :)
|
Thanks 3Demon,
your right about that. I have already learned so much already :) |

Just finished tut 6.
I'm having trouble with strecth tool, when i go to strecth command and move pints the whole poly moves when I just want the vertices to straighten out, unless there is a squash cmd. |
Quote:
:D Make sure that you are in 'Action Center : Selection' mode. That way, when you stretch points, they will move towards a common straight line. |
Thanks for the tip m8, it worked :)

Just got done with tutorial 7,
man it was pretty confusing and my wire looks messy as always :/ |

Just done with tutorial 8, messy wire as well
What you guys think? |
Hmm, doesn't look too shabby from where I'm sitting...
|
Thanks m8, but the bottom part is all messed i had to manipulate vertices alot and theres a whole polygon i had to delete or it wouldn;t subpatch at all.

Now i got a problem :/
When i use the knife trick this is what I get, all distortions |
fixed :), had 2 wedge some missing poly on top

How can I fix those 2 white lines ? |

Here it is after tutorial 13
C&C pls |

After Tutorial 14
|
Coming along awesomely well.
Couple of minor crits: The black rubber piece on the lower front fender looks as though its sticking out slightly at the ends - try and mould it slightly better to the shape of the fender - it should follow a nice smooth curve. The hood and front fender look as though they've got too much of a gap between them especially at the outer edge - just try moving a few groups of points around to make them mesh nicely. Apart from that - excellent. |
