This is my own attempt at car modeling after completing
Philips McClaren, Still a bit to do any comment please feel
free. Cheers Alan

Techi 24-12-2004 02:40 PM

nice work

Ribbons 24-12-2004 03:01 PM

Thankyou

Thankyou for the comment techi.

Alan.

Looking well smart. The headlights need some work on them at the moment - they look a little too much like solid pearls at present...

Ribbons 24-12-2004 05:53 PM

Thankyou

Cheers Mark,
Would you go for modeling the headlight housing and just
put a quartz glass surface on the headlight glass itself.

Cheers again Alan.

bullet_evader 24-12-2004 08:11 PM

the rims looks like plastic to me!! the rest is looking good!!

Ribbons 24-12-2004 08:21 PM

Thankyou

Cheers Bullet_evader,
I,ll fine tune those along with the rest at final render.

Thankyou again Alan.

Yep, if you're going for realism, you might as well go the whole nine yards...

Model the interior with a good chrome surface (model the bulb as well) - then model the glass over the surface too - this way you can apply a texture map to the interior of the lens to get the correct lens look as well as having an authentic looking interior to the headlight.,..

Thankyou

Cheers Mark,
I think thats the best thing to do, your right in what you say
also regarding realism.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Cheers again Alan

Ribbons 26-12-2004 01:12 PM

HDR Reflections

I used image world with a hdr image. Just set set up your lights
has you would normally within your scene then turn them all down
to zero turn on image world set it to 100% to start and start test
rendering.
PS you do not neccessarily need to turn down your lights to zero
you can use them in conjunction with image world

Re: The car surface here it is.

Cheers Alan

Done some more work on my mini, any crits please feel free.

Thankyou Alan.

jstarr976 26-12-2004 08:45 PM

Im having trouble wit hthe actual rendering... Ive done as you stated above but no matter how high I set the rays per evaluation it seems that the image continues to look spotty... Are there any perameters that I should be changing other than what you outlined above?? thanks..

Ribbons 26-12-2004 09:03 PM

Image world

Open up light properties click global illumination enable
radiosity, on the right of radiosity is the type choose backdrop only then start rendering with say 4 x 12 until you are ready
to do your final render. Then you can go up has high has you wish.
You can also go into the image editor and edit the hdr ie the contrast and hue and alike.
Hope this helps.

Cheers Alan.

Headlight woes

Could someone please help, I,m getting nowhere fast with
the headlight of my mini.
The best I get is a jam jar bottom and they dont look like that.
This seems to be my only stumbling block so anyone out there
please help.

Cheers Alan.

odeone 27-12-2004 01:43 PM

Fine work. Re the headlights, revisit the Mclaren videos for some tips or inspiration. You'd be amazed at what might joggle your memory or even solve your dilema. Closest thing I can suggest to start a headlight is Phils section on building the side indicator lens. Might be a basis for a start. Cheers...

Ribbons 27-12-2004 01:49 PM

Thankyou

Cheers Odeone,
It just seems whatever I try regarding surfaces it still looks
like a bag of cotton wool.
I toyed with uv mapping an old quartz type headlight if I could find one a picture of one. I,ll stick at it.
Thanks again for your comments Alan.

odeone 27-12-2004 02:01 PM

Not sure what you mean by cotton wool.
Ok. Then head over to Phils website and study his Jack Daniels tutorial on creating glass. Should help re texturing.
However if your refering to the pattern found on headlights try a bump map.

All else fails ask a mini owner to borrow their headlight....Mmmm..
Maybe not.

Ribbons 27-12-2004 02:11 PM

Thankyou

Thanks again Odeone,
I,m zooming there now.
Let you know how I got on.

Cheers again Alan.

Here is the light of my cobra that Im building. It is an older style light but I believe that it is along the same lines as the one you are trying to create. The glass has a simple bump map on it which I will post below. It also reflects and refracts. The inner lpart is a non smoothed sphere that has high reflection and low diffuse (Yours may have to be modeled more to match the new style lights, the old ones are just spheres. But you might be able to get away with it if you want...) thats pretty much it...

here... you can see the pattern for the new mini here and also the inside of the light is visible so you can build it correct... keep in mind that the lens will be refracting and distorting the structure inside so it doesnt have to be 100% perfect.

Techi 27-12-2004 05:31 PM

im no expert, but i drew in the bulb and surrounded it by crome, then added the outer glass, it gave a nice effect, i never did finish this model, although it did move on some from this, plan on returning to it once im not busy (probably never)

Cheers to both Techi and jstarr976, with your help I,m getting
there.

Thanks again Alan.

I tried to reproduc your scene with your setting and one of my car, but my result is not very good. I was wondering if you can share me your scene not your car but you scene or explaine me how you do it. Thank you
