Finally decided to enter the fray. I'm fairly computerless at the moment so you won't see any modelling for at least a week or so until my main machine gets fixed.

Anyway....I finally decided on the charater Linn Kurosawa from Capcom's "Aliens vs Predator" game.

Another reference picture....

Final reference picture to get an idea of the character...

It was a toss up between her, Alisia Dragoon (along with Dragon), the girl from Alien Storm (big makeover possibilities there as she only wore a yellow jumpsuit - I envisioned a much more well designed costume with logos and more of a Kill Bill Uma Thurman style) and one of the Samurai Spirits girls, but I thought they would have been ineligable due to Samurai Spirits 64...

Fallenswordsman 07-09-2005 08:35 AM

First ideas for redesign...

I really don't like her chest armour at all - it looks horribly unweildy and must make it next to impossible to move - I'm envisioning something more dynamic and flexible - maybe with plates shifting over each other for the chest piece. I may well get rid of the shoulder piece altogether - again, it looks unweildy to me.

Not entirely sure about the orange combat trousers either - might have to change the colour scheme somewhat to make her look more battleworn and I'm not sure if having camoflague at all will help her against any aliens.

I'll spend the next week of computer repairing trying to draw up some alternate designs and trying to put a scene together.

If you want to give her camoflague for the predators, then you should create a cool mud texture ( like in the first movie where arnold schwarzenegger is unseen because of all the mud ).
some green army clothes wont help i think. lol!

anyhow. cool character. I would keep the face like it is now.

now show us some progress :)

Fallenswordsman 07-09-2005 11:33 AM

Cheers, Bullet.

Just been doing a bit of research and it appears there was a SNES version of this.

I also want to make sure I'm following rules here - I am aware that there have been two first person shooters for the PC called Aliens vs Predator and one Playstation game which was some sort of strategy thingy I believe but none of these really bared much similarity to the scrolling beat-em up that I've highlighted here. But I just want to make sure, before I continue, that I'm still within the rules here. Linn Kurosawa, as far as I know has never appeared in 3D. Mike, am I able to carry on with this selection of character?

mtmckinley 07-09-2005 01:58 PM

yes, this is fine. Looking forward to it!

Early days - basic head build - no distinguishing features built on yet. Still using a slow slow computer though :(

Sharp 10-09-2005 01:11 PM

looking good

Cheers, Sharp. Not much to add - just defining out the head a bit more - I find nostrils as difficult, if not more difficult than ears because of the finer details and making the nostril wings look just right. Hence the lack of any real progress. The modelling will proceed a lot faster once I've got the head in place.

t1ck135 14-09-2005 12:35 PM

nice start and good character choice :)

Thanks Mr.Tickle! Minor update - I have done more of the head but its still incomplete - but then I thought it would be a good idea to start on the armour as well.

Blueflies 18-09-2005 09:36 AM

Wow, nice start. Looks like you know what you're doing there, keep it up!

I seem to be dodging around a bit on this one...started modelling the boots now.

@Blueflies - unfortunately I'm not quite clued up on what I'm doing - I'm winging it a lot of the time, but its going well anyway :)

The boot has been modelled by making the individual pieces of leather in different layers, then moving them all into one layer and stitching them together with the weld tool. Just have to stick the tongue of the boot in place properly and then put on the laces.

NoStr0m0 18-09-2005 06:11 PM

Niiiiice, AvP...love it.
Unfortunetly I'm too young and didn't get to play all those good ol' games, :((
Oh well...

Just a thought: you could make the boots steel tipped so they're more menacing :D well, as menacing as a boot can be.

P.S. Can't wait to see the rest. Are you going to do the hair too? Or just give her a wicked helmet?

Anyway...best of luck to you!

Fallenswordsman 18-09-2005 07:03 PM

Thanks, Nostromo. Too young? There should be some classic gaming sites out there that could give you some ideas. Just pick one and join in!

The idea is that I'm going to stick in hair depending on how difficult it is to do and time restrictions.

Steel tipped boots - now there's an idea - I'll keep that in mind for the texturing stage.

Anyway, that's me done for the weekend - back to work tomorrow and might not be able to touch her again (oo-er missus) until next weekend.

Boot has now been stitched together and I've added some lace holes and given the leather a bit of depth. The only thing left for the boots is the laces.

Oops - screwed up on the attachment...

bullet_evader 18-09-2005 07:06 PM

Nice boots so far.

Rest is looking good to. Her breasts could be a bit more rounder/smoother. Try to work in that more!

Fallenswordsman 19-09-2005 06:24 PM

Cheers, Bullet - the armour is more of a placeholder for now - I have to add a lot of detail. I'm just wondering whether or not to give her a pulse rifle - that alone will take a lot of modelling and I just spent an entire weekend doing just her boots. The sword seems a pretty stupid thing to add on. I know its an integral part of the character but when you consider itl would you really want to attack an alien with a samurai sword with all that acid for blood going on? Its pretty much a one shot weapon unless its made out of an acid proof alloy.

NoStr0m0 19-09-2005 07:02 PM

Thank you for the kind words. You make me blush.... but I think I'm gonna pas on this challenge.
There must be sites with good ol' classics but I want to know a game, the ideea behind it, the philosophy (I know I ask a lot but that't how I am)
I wish I had entered in the last one :headbang: (fear, loathing, light) that was a nice one and I had some ideas but, oh well, that's life. But now I'm kinda busy with school  and a few projects, one of which may actually result in some funds (:attn: ) so .....
GOOD LUCK to all and to all a good night

Anyway... Maybe the sword is for harakiri/sepuku/suicide in case the facehugger gives her a big wet kiss :alien: Ain't I a nice guy? :D

[Edit] (Damn) Me again :D Just a thought: maybe the sword has no real use. It's a good luck charm, to give her strength and keep her safe from harm, like a rabit's foot, only sharper and less fluffy :D

Quick head update - still got to do some minor tweaks to the lips and nose - I'm hoping to get the head finished by the end of the week.

@Nostromo - challeneges usually are centered around different CG disciplines including texturing, rendering, lighting, modelling and even animation - who knows what the next challenge will throw up so maybe you can have a go at the next one.

In the AVP game, the sword was actually quite a useful weapon, Capcom just seemed to have taken a bit of artistic license in it not getting completely melted.

NoStr0m0 21-09-2005 11:53 AM

One can only hope to proove himself in battle...

Until then I'm thinkin what cat should I enter: Beginer, Completely noob, noob by a long shot, not even in the same area code as noob, etc.
See, I have a problem with self esteem :D

Anyway... we'll live and see what's behind the next corner, who knows... maybe it's your path...

On the sword matter, have you considered to make the sword out of a special alloy, or maybe plastic, carbon fiber, gold, platinum (no, not the card) etc. There are enough substances in nature that don't care if they're in acid or blood, even if it's green and fluorescent.

One more thing and I'm off: If you actually want to give her a pulse riffle but you wouldn't want to make it the central piece of the theme, but instead place it over her soulder or something, you could just cheat and fake it with a cylinder and a sculpted cube or something, aligned just right to look like the riffle from above. Then you add the belt that holds the riffle over her shoulder and voila! This would save you a lot of time with modeling and still add to the complexity of the character. If you already thought about it, this just prooves that the idea is good :D
No one get mad at me for this, ok? If you don't like the idea, don't read.

Bye and good luck.

bullet_evader 21-09-2005 06:28 PM

Great improvements on the head FallenSwordsman.Give the lower lip a bit more volume though.
Looks like their is a flat part in the middle part of it.

I'm not happy with this head at all....too many bumps and lumps, and shows that I'm out of practice....the lips aren't right, the eyes aren't right - nothing is right. :headbang:
...but because I'm running out of time (yeh I know I have a month left still) I might have to leave it at this. What I think I'll do next is to model the rest of the body and then see if I have time to redo the head. Definitely frustrated at the moment though.

bullet_evader 22-09-2005 05:52 PM

Hey it isn't that bad. Just place the mouth a bit higher and also shorten the chin vertically.

I think you can fix that easy, and it would look much better.

Good luck with the rest of the body!

Cheers, Bullet - started on the armour this weekend. Hopefully this won't take too long....this is a huge piece of redesign work though and I'm wondering how much of the original character I'm keeping since the entire outfit seems to be slowly getting redone. Admittedly, the chestpiece is the same so far, but I'll probably be redoing it to add detail and rework the curvature. I don't even know if the camoflagued trousers will fit with the rest of the costume now...

Still working on the body....need some adjustments here and there and it looks as if I may well need to do the pulse rifle just to draw her back to being the original Linn Kurosawa rather than making it look like an archetypal chick in body armour.

bullet_evader 25-09-2005 10:35 AM

You're doing well! I don't have anything to critic yet!

t1ck135 26-09-2005 08:42 AM

looking good so far and looking forward to seeing it all together :)

Roykyle8 26-09-2005 10:14 AM

hello

wow1, that is so cool!, the balance on the body is just exact, its wonderfull, I hope maybe you can give me ssome tips some time, I'm only thirteen, anyway, thats cool!!

t1ck135 26-09-2005 04:54 PM

thanks for the comments on my thread fallenswordsman :)

here's hoping we both get them finished and looking good

Not much progress tonight, Chaps. I've been working late so haven't had much modelling time. Anyway, here's a reworked shoulder pad - I think I'll be adding detail to the armour as well just to make it look a bit better.

@Roykyle8 - What kinds of tips are you looking for? Unfortunately this kind of modelling is a bit of trial and error in trying to figure out what works best or what looks good.

@Mr.Tickle - Yep, I hope we can see a lot of entries to this contest - the Strider model over at SimplyMaya looks very nice as does the Joust model, but here's to your First Samurai model too! As I say, he does look cute and you're a lot closer to completion than me.

@Bullet - Thanks mate, your own model is coming on nicely too considering you haven't been working on it too long.

Nice start on the gun. Armor looks great too. I would suggest to move some polygons of her breast. View the picture to see what i mean.

Hi Bullet - thanks for the suggestion, I didn't quite understand what you meant at first, but having re-read what you wrote, I now understand! I haven't made the update just yet, but I will take your suggestion on board for the next update! Sometimes when you've been staring at the same thing for too long, you just can't spot these things so thank you for that!

I'm really wanting to get modelling finished so I can spend the last month of this competition messing around with texturing and figuring out rendering. I may well have to get a few of the fine tutorials around here to figure out texturing better as this is my weak point.

I hated the tummy area of the armour, so I've started redoing that. I want this area to look flexible so at least the character looks as if she can move around, the midriff section is meant to look as if it has some level of flexibility although I'm not entirely sure I've achieved the look I was going for.

Oh yeh, whilst I'm at it....a pulse rifle update

t1ck135 30-09-2005 02:03 PM

nice remodelling of the torso, and start to the blaster :)

I agree with bullet_evader about the breasts needing to be softened out a bit

Okay, adjusted the boobage - how does it look now? Also started pulling together the armour. It looks fairly rubbish at the back, but then I'm not going to be rendering the back.
