Character for Animation

1 Attachment(s)
Ello !

Started back at Uni so ill be back here Alot ! :p

here is a screen shot of the characters head, im having a bit of trouble with a crease that runs down the centre of the head, to me the polys seem in a nice order :headbang:

Also, if i have other problems u can see in my mesh then im all ears, ill be creating morph maps for the face so id like it modelled right to start with to make this easier,

Cheers

KrisYoung1980 11-10-2005 06:54 PM

Hey Mate,
I think the problem might be your inward bevels distorting the mesh, try running a band-glue around the 2 rows of central polys or use the smooth tool on the central area... (bear in mind that I don't really know what I'm talking about)

Mark 11-10-2005 11:27 PM

It could well be as Kris has said. Also try taking a look for any rogue degenerate polys (2 pointers, polys folded back on themselves, etc) as these will also distort a mesh.

Peter Murphy 12-10-2005 03:53 PM

Not bad Fraser. So much for "It's not a good idea to start modeling with a circle for a head, ever and that poly by poly should be the only way." I won't forget this!! :P

Nice model, looking forward to seeing it progress.

davie563 12-10-2005 04:16 PM

lol, i actually modelled that poly by poly, and i used 1/2 a sphere to complete the back of the head :P the front was done from a 6 sided disc, then beveled my way out :P

Fallenswordsman 12-10-2005 06:49 PM

Mmmm - I think a lot of people are very successful with what tends to be referred to as box modelling - start with a box or circle and just smooth shift away - it tends to be a lot quicker a method than poly by poly but I've personally never got the hang of it.

The model looks pretty sound so far..apart from what's already been said, I can't add much more.

KrisYoung1980 12-10-2005 06:51 PM

'Mon the Box Modelers!! I can't get my head around poly by poly or spline patching at all, nothing but box for me! ;)

JohnD5000 13-10-2005 08:12 PM

Hi guys, jus gettin my face in on yer threads now.

Yeah, gotta be box. I wouldn't know where to start with poly-by-poly. I started with a sphere for my head.

Lookin good Frasa.

ive finished the models :p

All i got to do is duplicate it, and texture them then ill get some renders up of the 2 guys standing next to each other... :attn:

Here is the texture map for the Pizza guys t-shirt, tried to keep it very Cheap lookin ;)

Peter Murphy 14-10-2005 11:14 AM

Gah. I havent even continued from where I was last time in uni. Better get a move on. God damn you. Nice map. Would be cool to see the characters tho, since you've finished modelling 'em.

davie563 14-10-2005 03:06 PM

ill get a pic up soon, with the 2 standing there, they wont be in a pose, just standing with arms spread, ill try and rig it and get a pose of the 2 up later aswell :)

Join the team man. We'll get it done in the end though, always do!

davie563 15-10-2005 01:42 PM

Character is rigged ;)

Just workin on Weight maps then i can get a pose up :)

By the way, do weight maps effect the morph maps u have created ?

KrisYoung1980 15-10-2005 01:48 PM

As far as I know they do, as I've seen weightmaps used to control fall off for morphs.

You're fairly motoring along with the workload, I'm still tweaking my rigs.

davie563 15-10-2005 02:15 PM

:p yeah, a part of me keeps sayin just get it done, and get on with ur CA4, after all thats about the only reason i came back for 4th year, but another parts wants me to keep adding stuff i cant win :(

This animation will be rough thou, prob on par with my lumber-jacks animatyion last year, i really want to get into my CA4 :headbang:

Here is a we shot of it rigged :p

The legs seem to be workin fine, by acident i seem to get this nice sway in the t-shirt as his legs move, i think it looks pretty good, what u think ?

KrisYoung1980 15-10-2005 04:24 PM

Looking good, love the wee growly expression you've put on him!

davie563 15-10-2005 04:27 PM

lol :p

Yeah, i have an Angry, Sad, Shocked and Confused expresion for both characters...

Just keepin it simple so i cant focus on the actual movment of the characters. Once i get these guys rigged, i think ill throw 2gether at least 1/2 of the animation in time for the presentation :p well fingers crossed

JohnD5000 15-10-2005 05:50 PM

Are any you guys putting dialogue in your animations?

davie563 15-10-2005 11:10 PM

No, there is no talkin in mine, just gestures.

davie563 17-10-2005 12:44 PM

thats the legs all rigged :)

I think ill do the arms IK aswell, to keep everything alot easier :)

davie563 17-10-2005 01:03 PM

Actually, SOD that, ill do the arms FK, u get more control that way, :)

here is the pizza box :attn:

Peter Murphy 17-10-2005 09:58 PM

lol! That pizza box rules. It's look great Fraser. Like your character image maps. They look fab.

Fallenswordsman 18-10-2005 12:42 PM

Looking good at the moment although the head does seem to suffer from having a bit of a crease going down the middle. Character is fairly basic, but presumably you're looking more at animation than anything else?

JohnD5000 19-10-2005 06:27 PM

Nice box!

Aw well I tried Fraser, but no third page for you yet matey!

KrisYoung1980 19-10-2005 09:33 PM

Awww Fraser, you upset coz you don't have a third page yet? Oh well maybe this time?!

.... I guess not!

JohnD5000 20-10-2005 01:28 AM

Can't you change how many posts you see on a page in your settings? If so, you could have 30 pages if you really wanted.

Oh and by the way, 1 more post after this and you should have another page. lol
But you need to come up with some new work to put in it! And nobody else should post till you do. (just a bit of motivation for you.)

woohoo !

Just got my new 19'' LCD :p

Really chufffed with the picture quality, really crisp, just thought id post a we pic :attn:

Fallenswordsman 21-10-2005 08:02 PM

Cool rig....and here I am still stuck with my trusty 5 year old CRT. Oh well, it still works I suppose even if it generates huge amounts of heat and is built like a brick. :headbang:

This wasn't about getting that third page was it ;)

davie563 21-10-2005 08:07 PM

lol, for the last 4 yrs i had been using a 17'' CRT, i loved it, but i couldnt pass up the deal on this 1.

davie563 21-10-2005 08:19 PM

Hi, i just bought Norton Internet Security, and when it is enabled in the system tray i cant open lightwave 8, it just freezes, but when i de-activate it it loads perfect and with no probs :headbang:

I think i might have selected or been in a bit of a rush when i opened it the 1st time after the instilation of norton and i feel i have put a block on it, how do i get into the setting and make modeller and layout free to open.

Cheers

kilvano 22-10-2005 04:49 AM

Ive almost finished modelling the bouncer for outside the door and ive finished the small dude trying to get in. Amazing what 9 hours on a plane does. Its on my laptop, ill post tomorrow (or today since its 5:42am)

KrisYoung1980 22-10-2005 11:12 AM

Ha Ha

I knew you'd have to post a pic of your set up as soon as I saw that Fraser had.

davie563 22-10-2005 11:58 AM

lol, That pic looks so bad Chris, it looks like u spent ages gettin ur laptop and all that in postiton, and ur phone and all that :p U forgot the kitchen sink lol

U can show off on ur own thread, get ride of the pic

JohnD5000 22-10-2005 03:06 PM

Yo, Fraser, the whole Nortons thing is what was wrong with my lightwave, remember!?

Open Nortons and under Status & Settings click Personal Firewall then click on Configure. Then click on the Programs tab. Then scroll down and change the Internet access to Permit All. Remember to do it to all the Lightwave programs though (Lightwave, Modeler and Hub).

I assume that it's got something to do with the fact that there's separate programs running together.

That should sort out yer problem!

Don't forget the strategicaly placed 3D magazine with the keys and the CD on top to make it look like it's been there for a while and things have been hapening since.

davie563 22-10-2005 03:10 PM

i gave up and deleted it from my comp, i got it free with my monitor. but im back with windows firewall and AVG virus checker :)

Everything is workin perfect now

KrisYoung1980 22-10-2005 03:29 PM

You're one to talk about strategic positioning of stuff Fraser, with the three note pads perfectly aligned, the keyboard at precisely 90 degrees to everything else and the piece de resistance, the Fraser Davie Animations being clearly visible on the monitor!
