August Challenge - Cchristensen - Normal

Someone has to enter this and defend SimplyLightwave so off I go.

Coming from the land of Jeffrey Dahlmer and Ed Gein I think it is only fitting that my Mad Scientist be the kind of guy that likes to build things out of biological parts. We'll see how gruesome I can get this lab in the next 23 or so days. When I first read the contest description the first thing I thought of was the 'Eye Guy' in Blade Runner (below). My lab won't resemble his but it will be some good inspiration.

Cchristensen 08-08-2003 05:15 AM

Eyeball anyone?

DigiMatt 08-08-2003 06:26 AM

sounds really interesting cory!! and its really great to see someone finally joinging this months challenge :)

08-08-2003 07:12 AM

hehe very cool eye ball mate :)

good start

Cchristensen 08-08-2003 01:02 PM

Digimatt - Someone has to put those Maya people in their place :D

The eye just needs a few veins for effect. I'll add those a bit later. Right now I need to make more parts...er I mean objects.

philip 08-08-2003 03:16 PM

cool to see you entering Cory!!

*my eyes my eyes* :D

Cchristensen 09-08-2003 04:10 AM

Ever get the feeling you are being watched?

Cchristensen 09-08-2003 04:16 AM

I got the eye fully textured now. On the previous side shot the ball part was just procedures and a shader. I added an image map for veins and to darken around the outside of the Iris. I also darkened the edge of inside of the iris (Philip's suggestion). Redid the texturing on the optic nerve and a few other tweaks.

Mmmm... Almost good enough to eat. *shlurp*

Cchristensen 09-08-2003 02:13 PM

What do you mean almost?

DigiMatt 09-08-2003 02:40 PM

I think it looks yucky ;) in a good way hehe

Well... It needs some salt and balsamic vinegar to really add to the flavour - no self respecting eye connoseur would stoop so low as to eat one without. :D

And here we have a severed hand which is a staple item for your typical homocidal mad scientist. Interesting tatoo the victim has.

Mark 10-08-2003 09:44 AM

Ahh... 'Tis Kevin's hand. Finally he has seen the light and removed Maya from his life! :D

DigiMatt 10-08-2003 09:56 AM

Awesome cory!! poor Kevin but he should have seen it coming ;)

18-08-2003 10:49 AM

great work there mate :)

Its looking really good thus far

Cchristensen 20-08-2003 05:43 AM

Nope I haven't forgotten the challenge. Next things to do are to build some lab equipment and the work table. I whipped up a newspaper that sits under the hand.

Mark 20-08-2003 07:40 AM

Ughh... Looks just like the food served up by my local chippy :p

Cchristensen 21-08-2003 01:17 PM

I got a few more items built up last night. Your standard things like test tubes, beakers, etc... Also built the work counter, walls, and floor so I can start putting the shot together.

I started building the thing below. Originally I was going to have just a couple of mean-looking eyes showing in the darkness but I kept going on the model and now I am not sure what I am going to do with it. It is a creature created by one of the experiments and now lives in a cage in the lab. I have purposely exagerated the features.

Cchristensen 22-08-2003 05:29 AM

Todays update...

Mark 22-08-2003 07:37 AM

Coo... Reminds me of my cell (sorry workspace) back at home :D

jerry 23-08-2003 08:40 PM

You as well then eh? And I just thought I was just wierd doing that sort of stuff :D

Cchristensen 24-08-2003 03:35 PM

It's more common that you think. Maybe we should have a site called SimplySeveredParts or SimplyPsychotic?

Now THAT I like...

Cchristensen 25-08-2003 06:50 AM

Mark 25-08-2003 10:38 AM

Read it? I was the editor!

jerry 26-08-2003 09:11 AM

lol nice!!!!:D

I think we have that one at our local Staples :)

Erwin 28-08-2003 09:09 PM

Wait a minute...... Something odd about that book........ HmMMmM

Cchristensen 29-08-2003 02:30 PM

Times are tough, even for Mad Scientists - http://www.theonion.com/current_news1.html

I guess I better wrap this thing up over the weekend. Is that deadline local time or GMT?

Cchristensen 31-08-2003 09:23 PM

OK. This is going to have to be my final image. IT is nowhere near where I wanted it to be by now but free time evasporated halfway through the month so I had to rush this together this morning. Basically what you have here is a lab with a shelf of testtubes and other lab-type supplies, a creature that is the result of some experimentation in a cage, a severed hand that is being worked with (knives are laying around next to it), a 'Dummies Guide to Mad Science' book, a lab journal, an eye being experimented with. It is hooked to the readout machine.

I have to call it done but I am not all that thrilled with it. Hey Kevin, how about making the competitions last 2 months ala CGTalk so we have a bit more time to tweak.

jerry 01-09-2003 02:28 AM

cool i like it
good job

DigiMatt 01-09-2003 06:34 AM

good job Cory! I especially like the cut off hand, really disgusting ;)

Erwin 03-09-2003 06:13 PM

Nice job Cory! Hey I see Chip inside the cage!
