My teacher asked us to model somthing small and simple so I chose a stapler. For class he wants us to apply basic textures of a solid color and mess with the settings that will change the reflection, glow, all that stuff.
Like most staplers this one is mostly black with the thinner part in the center being chrome. How would I go about having certain polygons be one color and the center part being a chromish? Thanks. ![]() |

Your uploaded image dident work.
The easyest way is to assign different surfaces to the different parts. The thin part you would assign a chrome surface by selecting the polygons and typeing q then enter chrome for the name. Then select the polygons you want for the black part and hit q and enter a name for that surface. Now open Surface editor and you will see the Chrome surface and the other surface. Just enter the values for the different surfaces. Here is some starter chrome for you. For good looking chrome you need to have a good environment to reflect try an HDIR image for good reflections. Color very Light blue/grey 155 Red 165 Green 169 Blue Diffuse 25% Specularity 80% GLossiness 70% Reflection 50%-60%

Well I totally understood you when you described how to create surface sets so that went fine as you can see, but I think there may be a problem in my model. Here is an image of the same stapler next to each other, one subdivided and one not. The subdivided one seems to have funky lighting on certain surfaces.
Also I didnt really have a scene to put them in to make a little more dramatic lighting because Im still new at this. So instead I put them inside a sphere and the lighting didnt seem to change at all form this version. That is the default lighting in lightwave. Im not sure if that light at the top there is even turned on. ![]() |

How can I go back later and add more polys to a surface I set?

Looking at the render you might have missed some polys to add to the surface. Go to modeler highlight the polygons you want to add to a surface set. Hit q and use the dropdown and select the surface set you want to add them to and hit ok.

If the polys are in another surface set will it remove them from the one set when I add to another?
