Default walk cycles?

i am a noob at animating and i am working on a robot and was wondering if i had to animate his walking frame by frame or if there was something else i could do...i head about walk cycles but im not sure if i could use them in this instance. and if i can can somebody point me to a good walk cycle tutorial
