Default To extend or not?

Ok, I have the basic head from the tut on this site, and i went ahead and
subdivided it to add details to the face. Now would anyone be so kind as
to tell me how I might complete the back of his head? I tried to extend
the the poly's from the top all the down to the neck but I ended up with
little wing thingies on the side?

Hope this helps,

i have used your previous image as the reference for my explanation,

1) hightlight in order the points circled in red
2)hit extender and move them to the red line so it lines up with the next set of polys
3)Hightlight in order the points that are green and hit "p" for poly
4) keep doing the same thing with the blue and yellow from step one until you reach the neck

To do the side of the head you keep selecting the vertices and hitting extender to extend them down.

Make sure you dont pull them down too far because then they won't line up with the rest of the polygons around the vertices

Tell me if this is confusing,

Hi, your explanation was clear and easy to follow. However I have tried this
method and I still get the the little wings on the side, the further I go down
the larger the wings get? I have tried to scale the polys as I extend then and
that does not work either?

Here is an image of what I am talking about; notice how the outside edge
of the skull extends out too far...

I must be missing something.

i have drawn another quick image, i believe that you might not have a reference or a picture that you are modeling off. If you do then you can see that a persons head is roundish all around
after you do extender you have to move points around to achieve that roundness

now my model isnt exactly round because it took me a couple mins to make it but i think you should get the idea
hopefully i havent confused you and good luck
