Default '68 Dodge Charger R\T 440 Magnum

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to show you what i've did of better 'till now.

This is a '68 Dodge Charger R\T 440 Magnum done under Lightwave 7.5 in SubD Patch. It consist of about 310000 polys.
This is my biggest mesh, and this is the first time i do a real car by myself, with no tutorial (the first one was a Nissan 350Z, taken from a tutorial from Lightwave's site).

So here's the beast :

Tell me all

no comment, buddy....

1) how fast was the refresh when rotating/panning views?
2) whats your configuration? (if SG, dont answer ;-))
3) how long time did the final render take?
4) how long did the whole model take?

gotta drink a little more to swallow this one ;-)))

WOW, thamks for all your comment it's always nice to have a good feedback (worse feedback too, it allow to improve.... )

OK, so to answer all your questions, let's take it one by one :

- Refrash for ratation/pan. : AWFULL !!!!! it, is SOOOOO LONG !!!!!, when i want to make a specific view, i prepare it with a simple cube wich is the size of the car in an ampty layer, and the i switch to the layer of the car........

- My config : I would have love not to answer this question as you told if i have a SG not to answer, but it is not the case, my computer is an eMac - G4@700MHz - 384Mb of RAM and an 40Gb of HD - it is running OSX (10.2.2) and Lightwave 7.5

- For the pictures of the car, it took me about 50 to 60 mns : there's an aera light, wich size is magnified 50 times, raytraced shadows, reflections, refractions,e tc.... Sadow noise reduction, low AA, soft filter...... i guess that's all....

- I work on that model for about 6 full weeks, 8 hours a day (not on the weekends) (for info, this is not my job, i'm french and in immigration process to Quebec, and during the process, i can't work, so i take my time to improve in 3D)

- For the technic to model this car, it is the technic explain in a lihjtwave tutorial (here's the link : http://www.newtek.com/products/light...car/index.html )
it consist of geting schematic of the car, or anything else, called "blueprints", putting the different views of this blueprint as backdrop image in each view port of the modeler, to have the good reference, and the, i used the SubD Patch method (Tab key) to extend the Patches along the car body, using the 3 views to and their own backdrops to create the volume and the shape of the car in 3D. Actually it is very simple, and it gives VERY GOOD RESULT (don't forget this is my FIRST REAL CAR MODELING !!!). Then, you have to had the more details has possible to have a (near) photorealistic look. Then, a lot of works on surfacing, lighting, etc.......

Yes, why not, i'll try to submit a view to the gallery..... but the cars, wich are already here, are really amazing, i don't know if i could be accepted...... why not.....

Anyway, once more, thnaks to all

lol - Well spotted there Digi. Also, I'd look again at the reflectivity of the paint job. At the top of the bonnet (hood for our North American friends), it looks as though the rear view mirror and interior of the car is perfectly reflected. In reality, there wouldn't be anywhere near this much reflectivity.

Apart from that though. Excellent.

lol, no of course, they also drive at night, and here's the secret, there are some kinf of panels in front of the headlights, wich retract when the driver lights it on.
The headlights are 2 round lights and 2 each side of the car as you can see here :

http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/...w/MVC-025s.jpg

It's also a reason why i choose this car, because the headlights are hidden : i don't know how to modelise this to have a photorealistic look..... if anyone have some trick and explainations to give me, it should be kind : how to modelise the deflectorsm the glass in front wich has so complicated drawings, etc.......

Thanks for your comment.

About the reflectivity, my surface preset isn't perfect yet, it was also my first attempt with gradients so i have too practise again..... So i'll fix it, don't worry
