Default smoothing

In the elephant tutorial, the guy uses a smoothing tool, I can only do it by using subdivide(smoothing) but i would like to use it like in the tutorial in which it doesnt mess up the polys, please help.

I don't have the video, but I assume he is using the smoothing command Shift-m. Just a guess though.

I don't have that video but I believe you might mean smoothing, as on surface smoothing; available in the surface editor near the bottom

I dont know the exact time, but its right when he starts modeling the head of the elephant which is pretty much at the beggining after his photoshop stuff.

How about subpatching it, press the "tab" key. Thats my guess anyway...like the others I've not got the video. Hope this helps.

OK. If you mean when he's just creating the mouth and tweaking it, he says "let's activate sub-patches..." and becomes smoothed out, then it's sub-patches. Hit the Tab key.
