Default Prespective view

In the videos Philip rotates stuff freely in the prespective view in modeler, how do you do that. I keep getting gimbal lock trying to get a good view of the bottom of an object

Just to let others know hold down Alt and you can rotate freely in the prespective view its a good way to get a view of the bottom and Alt + Ctrl will let you zoom.
