so i login to see wats new and see a couple of new tutes and think great then im hit with the disappointment the first is misleadingly advertised and then even more disappointed that the above is a knock off of Digital tutors Mixed Modeling Techniques in 3ds Max by Todd Daniele artist even used the same references. if your going to do something similar you could have at least chosen a different loco.

I'd never seen that tutorial before, I don't use Max so I never go through their tutorials. I'd never intentionally publish something someone else had done on another platform I'd have insisted on a different train model. I'll be removing the Locomotive from the site temporarily. As this is Lightwave and not Max I'll be writing to the original author to see if he minds if we use it. This should have been done first of course but I honestly did not know.
I wrote the description on the interior that was all my cock up, I meant to say one photographic reference was used and explain it a bit better my mistake. Anyone that wants a refund because of this misinformed description just need to give me a shout. It was not meant to intentionally mislead and has now been changed. All the best David |

Hi nwalker78,
Just because it's the same train doesn't make it plagiarism. How many times have you seen duplicate tutorials for an Audi, Ferrari, iPhone, etc. from different sites, for different software and different authors? They almost always use the same source blueprints but their teaching is unique. Plagiarism is when you copy the tutorial itself word-for-word. Otherwise it's fair game. AFAIK nobody owns the exclusive right to model a steam locomotive. |

Hi lifo,
Yes i know your gonna get tutorials repeated over and over and this i have no problem with because aspects of individuals, there workflows and methodologies vary and of course different software used and its great to see the differences between the two subjects but stleast have the decency to give the orignal author credit instead of claiming its yours. From what i can rber the original author used his completed model to produce the blueprimts for tutorial for the rest of it the workflow was pretty much copied from the point at which the model was started to techniques used to model the parts even breaking it down into the same layers even the finished render was the same. |

Ok I wasn't aware that it was actually taking parts from someone else's tutorial. This would be different. I guess it's now up to the author to explain himself.

I bought the tutorial and worked it, I never knew there was a problem with it. I won't ask for any refund, I thought the tutorial was fine. that said, I think the original author might be looking into a lawsuit. I guess this is a lesson learned, for new tutorials, there needs to be a little background search before giving it the go ahead. I had decided to do a modeling tutorial using a train and was working on getting the reference together when this one came along, which was why I was interested, to see how he went about it. I realized, it was difficult to get good detailed reference because each locomotive built was more or less custom built for the railroad that ordered it.

Hi David,
has this been resolved yet? I hope it won't stall the release of other tutorials b/c this site was just going back in the right direction. |

The train has not been resolved quite yet I've written to the original publisher of the Max tutorial and explained the situation asked them to get back to me if they have any problems with a Lightwave version of the same tutorial. They did get back to me straight away saying they would look into it.
That was two weeks ago and so far I have not heard back from them I shall wright and ask again. ----------------------------- In the mean time here is a quick look at some of the shots form out new Lightwave Dynamics tutorial everything is pretty rough right now but we are getting there. SimplyLightwave Preview 01 - YouTube This tutorial will be a fairly comprehensive 10 hour ish look at the bullet dynamics system in Lightwave |

I've been talking to the author of the train tutorial he in fact did work through the original Max tutorial years ago. He did not think it would be a problem to recreate it in Lightwave. This may have been a little naive but i honestly believe he acted in good faith.
He and I agree however that given the circumstances we will create another tutorial to replace the train. In this case a Tram from Prague which should make for a really cool model, any one that purchased the train will of course get access to this new and better tutorial free of charge. I hope people can see that moments after SLW learned of this problem we took action to correct it. We have informed the original publishers of this issue and they seem happy enough. Expect the replacement tutorial within a couple of weeks. All the best David |

Hi David,
this is all fantastic news. I think it suffices that you took down the tutorial ASAP in terms of a remedy, but maybe you should offer a token payment of some sort. Like a nice bottle of wine or a gift certificate to the original author. Looking forward to the replacement and the dynamics one. Any more that you have planned? I Understood that you had found 10 additional tutors? |

When we looked for staff we had a 100 or so people apply, form this we picked out 10 that where good enough. From that 10 we found 3 that we wanted to work with.
It's our plan for the next few months to release 1 to 2 tutorials a month and then increase that if all goes to plan. I wont tell you whats next till the project has been started just in case it falls through. All the best David |
