Cheers Guys! Just finishing off a few more props at the moment, little critters and such - more wips soon!

@JM317: you can export GIFs from most web creation software (Flash, Adobe Image Ready - even Adobe After Effects). I used Image Ready for mine!

Cheers! priimate.

Hi All! Just finished a little crab for my scene, not sure whether to stick with a solid "crab" colour, or use a glow-in-the-dark, semi transparent finish like a deep sea critter. I'm leaning more towards the crab colour because the other is quite bright and tends to draw your focus to it. The crab is just a small detail and not intended to be a focal point. Decisions, decisions!
:headbang:

Here's a wip:

Cheers! priimate.

I think the glow looks better. Not too bright. Just a little glow.

Hi Tiago2! Ive been running test renders over the last 15 minutes or so and the bright crabs are definately distracting (there are a few other little creatures with that glowing texture already in the scene), the white is starting to permiate the entire scene, which is actually quite dark, so I've decided to go back to the "crabby" texture (it adds a bit more colour to the scene - which is mostly muted tones with a lot of black). I think it kinda fits better with the cartoon style as well (solid colours)! I used weight maps to drive the colour variation on the shell.

Thanks for your feed back! Here's another wip:

Cheers! priimate.

Crab looks excellent, all looks like its tying together quite nicely... are you going to animate at all or you just going for a still scene?
Would be nice to see those wee guys in action

Cheers
Kris

Yeah, I say go with the solid color on the crab. When I think translucent sea dweller I think of shrimp and jellyfish and some fish but a traditional crab like you've modeled just doesn't strike me a a see-through kinda guy. Looks cool though! You did a great job on his geometry. I am concerned that the crab is not as stylized as the fish. I'm not saying they won't look good together ... I'm just thinking they would tie together better if he was more extreme like the fish.

You're doing an awesome job!

Thanks very much for the feedback Tiago2, KrisYoung1980 and swankymonkey!

I'm starting to add small details to my scene, this crab is the first, and is down in the foreground. As you can see, he's pretty small (too small to see any detail, but big enough to figure out it's a crab!) I've also had to tone down the lighting for him, to make it look as though he's partially shadowed. When I changed his texture to it's current settings, he still really drew your eye 'cos he's really the only bit of red/orange in the scene.

I always have trouble keeping a consistant style between models that are meant to be grouped in some way - this will be the first time i've put together a scene with more than one organic character/animal in it! This is strictly gonna be a still project - half the time I get so carried away, I end up animating before i've finished half the modelling!

Here's the relationship between the crab and the fish, as far as focal points go!

Cheers! priimate.

Hey Priimate!

I want to make a suggestion. When I first glanced at this last render I thought: Why not have the 2 interacting? Have the fish looming over the old can and have the crab getting ready to defend himself or trying to stay hidden? Just a thought to bring a little of nature's drama to the scene.
