Im not sure if I'm allowed to plug other peoples products given that this is a business, but if my post doesnt get deleted I'd say any of the Dan Ablan books are good if you are just starting out, if you are lookingto do cartoon characters, Johnny Gorden is a good bet. Really depends what you want to do to be honest...

So i guess this is as a good a place to introduce myself as any. Hello Everyone my name is Sam im also 22 and studying lightwave 9.3 at college. I have version 9.2 is there much diffrence?
I have used maya8.5 a little bit and understand modeling at an exstent however this is making it difficult for me to grasp lightwave as i can never find anything i want. Like how do i bring up the numeric panel and also how do i merge 2 points together? Thanks for reading. |

Press "n"for the numeric panel. Press CTRL + W for welding points. (Welding and merging the same thing?) :p |

what happens is when you merge points all the points that are at a distance less than the max value introduced will be merged at the location of the first point in the series. So if you have points 101, 203, 222 and 500 at a distance less than say 1 m of each other and you press merge-fixed 1m- then all the points will be moved over point 101 and merged With weld you select which point is the base ( the last point you select) so all the others that are selected before the last one will be moved over the it and merged. But as long as the effect goes, yes, both are the same thing. Merge is just more automatic than weld since you don't have to select the points to be merged. [edit]oups... last point.... my mistake.. welcome all you newbies ! The others also forgot to mention that when you weld points, al points will be welded to the last point you selected. There is also a command to weld the average between the points as well.
Merging points are generally used to insure any loose points might be welded and your mesh is clean without poly's that look like they are connected but aren't and should be.
