Can anyone tell me why the insides of this thing are no longer lit up?

Shot with the lid on...

Need to change the surface of the lid to be similar to the rest of the watch...

Looks awesome! How do you add HDRI to your render?? can you point to a good tute...

R4s1n - there's a good explanation of the use of HDRI here:

The main thing you need to do though is within Lightwave Layout go to:
1. Window > Backdrop Options
Then from the Background Tab of the Effects window...
2. Click on "Add Environment" and then select "Image World"
3. Edit the properties of your Image World and select an HDR file as your lightprobe image
Note: The lightprobe images are in the Content > Images > Lighting directory of Lightwave (You should find these on the content CDs if you haven't installed them with Lightwave 8) The HDR probe files will have an HDR filetype.

If you have any questions, let me know. I really don't know what I'm doing, but I can get the basics running at least.

Final render for the evening and I'm done.

Just booked a flight to Japan for December which means I won't be around to post my renders up. It also means I need to get this finished by mid-December before I leave so it won't be perfect but at least it'll be something. I'm pretty much done on the modelling side now anyway, but learning this HDRI stuff is proving to be a bit of a PITA. I also need to learn how to texture - can you believe I've never textured anything before because I've never actually completed a model? Maybe I should knock myself back to noob because this is definitely new territory for me.

Rats, forgot to turn on Radiosity for my renders - wonder if this is why the interiors aren't showing too well?

Try to put your glass object in a different layer in modeler and turn off "cast shadows" for it in layout...

That's something I really have to try - I might take the glass out completely in my test render model and see if that makes a difference, but I would never have thought of this myself so thanks a bzillion for the suggestion. :beer:

Quick test for the evening. As mentioned before, I've never got to the texturing stages before so this is all new to me. Just adding the numbers to the dial, and I think I'm going to need to fatten them out a bit judging by their current size. I still need to take the glass out and see how it renders but I've run out of time for the evening.

Thanks for comments, guys. Tickle, it would be nice to make it move at a later date once the competition is over - I've never done animation before and this may well be a good starting point.

Texturing has commenced Don't know what I'm doing though, for the most part! Mmmm, bump maps.

Okay, I've found out why the middle isn't lit up - I think its to do with the HDRI image not having any lighting from that point, I rotated the watch, lost the floor and re-rendered and the middle lit up quite nicely. So I think I'm going to have to play around with my environment to get a nice render.

Or you could simply add a nice soft area light to the scene and switch it off from affecting certain parts of the geometry...
