Color picker
I kno how to use the colors and all but i cant seem to make the color that i want and i was hoping somebody could tell me what the numbers and percentages are for the color gold. if there is such a thing as a color tutorial then i would highly appreciate it thanx, Sergei

the problem with gold is, it needs a little more than just the right color. Since it's a metal, you'll need reflections, and since gold is a pretty soft metal, a soft specular can really help.
you could try and use the gold preset as a starting point. the color I most often use as a basic color for gold is RGB 178 174 127 (with the color format set to integer in the display panel under interface)

Also what are the basic steps to adding a texture of your own cuz ive seen a couple of tuts but i am still confused

I'm not sure what you mean by a texture of your own... but this might help:
Select the polygons you want give a texture. Hit q, a dialog box will come up where you can give the surface name and some other major properties. Open the surface editor (on the top left, or CTRL + F3). Select on the left the surface that you want to edit. Change the attributes to what ever you want. You can also open up the presets panel, choose a preset and double click on it to apply it. Hope that helps.

thanx for the advice kvaalen..never knew i could do that
also when phillip said add reflection to it , i did but when i tried to render the object the gold surface reflected the backdrop color.. can anybody tell me how to get rid of that cuz im not really good at that sort of thing <leaves me wondering why i even started 3d modeling>

In the surface editor you can choose (under the enviorment tab) what you want the surface to reflect.
...OR... Just open the backdrop panal (under the Scene tab, or CTRL + F5) and change the backgound.

oh, in order to have your gold material actually reflect something, there must be something to reflect of course
you can add more objects to teh scene, or add an image world (scene -> backdrop) or use a reflection map in the environment tab of your gold material (I should cover reflection maps in the tute as well I guess...)

what i meant to write was that i want the gold to shine ...but i dont want it to reflect the backdrop color

In the surface editor under 'environment' change the reflection option from 'ray tracing+backdrop´to 'Ray Tracing+Speherical Map' then apply a reflection map.. wola
