Question Basic Scene?

O.k Do any of you guys or girls use a basic layout(besides the default) to see how things are looking while your modeling?
Like what kind of light setup and backdrop(if any) or do you have a basic modeled box?
Reason for asking is:
If been working on my modeling skills since I got Lw and have'nt
really touched anything in the layout.
Thanks
T

kinda quiet around here, eh? Well LwT, I'm still pretty new at 3D, so count me with the new guys. I'm running Lightwave 7.5 on an 800MHz dual processor G4 which includes a 64MB graphics card. I also bought an inexpensive MPDD+ 8MB graphics card to run a second monitor for the menus, Surface Editor, etc.

Your question brings to mind a few different possibilities as to what you are referring to. If you mean do I use a standard background while I'm for example lighting and texturing a character the answer is no. I'll only create or load in a BG object if I need it specifically for shadows, a floor to stand on, or whatever.

I usually work in the Quad viewport setup with my 19-inch monitor set at 1600x1200. One port shows the Camera View, and one the current Light. The other two are usually a Top view, and a Perspective view in order to easily move things around. The Layout window only takes up about 60% of the screen, leaving room enough for other windows.

My computer includes a DVD player, so I feel extremely fortunate to be able to play some of the best movies ever made, then either pause on a frame or take a screen shot which gives me a guide to try and copy the lighting. Those master cinematographers and gaffers give me plenty of inspiration, and appreciation when I realize that some of those seemingly "simple" shots are lit with such subtlety that I have a helluva time trying to duplicate it! And I'm talking about a static, "held" shot, never mind moving the camera!

i usually use a light array or light dome, unfortunatly I know what you mean. just when you want to check out a model you have think all about setting up a whole scene lights, AA, radiosity, render options, man too much work.

so now I have Eki's plug pack, auto makes 6 different types of quick scenes all set up, pop your model in, and see it quick.
also uses spin lights, so no radosity, shorter renders. worth the $$$$

If you want a quick set up, let me know I can get you started. I can direct you to some tutes, or email one of my scenes.

Thanks for the reply's guys.
roguenroll : You hit the nail right on the head Sometimes you just want to check it out in the layout but you wind up spending
well at least for me 30+ minutes just trying to get it to look ok.
I'm going to check out Eki's plug pack and if you can point me to a tut that would be cool
Thanks
Todd

check these at preset central

and my hDR quickstart,
http://www.lwg3d.org/forums/showthre...&threadid=7640

this is using, no radiosity, and HDR for reflection.
Just want to throw out that HDR is usually used in
cooperation with radiosity, but this is more of a silver
reflection surface. no rad. needed. experiment!!!!!

good luck

i'm kinda a newbee myself but i experienced a great improvement with rendering/lights when i make a ceiling above the object. So i think a more enclosed space is better for a nice look (but don't shoot me if i'm wrong ...still got so much to learn :/)

Besides that i use area lightning alot...they give the best results i think.
