Default gun fire

Hi there,

I have just finished my plane model, and now i was wanting too add some effects to it. I have got my plane flying low over ruined buildings (ww2 animation), and i have got guns built into the front of the plane, and was wanting to have animated fire, as if there was shots coming from the guns. I was wondering if anyone could help me out, or if there was any tutorials out there that could help me achieve this.

Guess there are lots of ways to get this going. Although i havent tried anything like that. I would be tempted to try volumetric lightings or lens flares..... Hmmm, point lights.....and sizing..... well go and fiddle around and explore and i think you will get somewhere. Good Luck.

Hmm... How about a modelled flame burst for the front of the gun textured with a fiery, semi transparent texture - with a point light in the centre (try taking a look for a candle flame tutorial and adapt). Then, for each of the impact points, try adding particles and HVs.

Yeah i will give it a try.

Just another thing, i have animated the plane flying over buildings, but there is something that is bothering me (the propeller) i have rotated it so it spins, but you can still see each blade clearly as it rotates round, the effect i would like is something like the image i have added.

Also if you go to this website, it try's to explain how to get this effect but i dont understand it

Oh ya its motion blur... Try it and you will get it. Its there somewhere,,,, not really coming to my mind at this moment.... Maybe i'll check and get back... Think its at the camera properties or....

i loaded my model into layout, (this is not the animated version of my model as its only the propeller i'm focusing on just now), the next step was to select my propeller, the went to motion blur, and chose normal from the drop-down list, i then rendered the current frame, but it makes no difference to the propeller.
What am i doing wrong here?

Well, your propellor has to be moving in the first place,,, i would suggest the graph editor, set the property to repeat so the propellor will keep going round till the end of the animation then your anti anlising must be at least low or more, lastly try to increase the value to see the blurring. Here is a image,,, Objects are the default objects that come with lightwave,,, The animation is done with Motion Detector. The Motion Blur value is 250

I have done what you said and it has worked fine, however if i was wanting to get the impression that the propellers were going a bit faster, would you just increase the blur length?

My Settings are:

Blur Type: Normal

Blur Length: 250%

I'm playing the animation over 60 frames, the way i have done the propeller is creating a keyframe at frame 2, does this effect the speed of the propeller, for example if i had the keyframe at frame 10 would it rotate slower than the keyframe at frame 2?

I have also repeated the rotation of the propeller as you said.

I have also added antialiasing:

Antialiasing Level: Enhanced medium

Enhanced AA

Adaptive Samp.

Let me know if i should make any changes to get the impression of the propeller rotating faster.

Check out the sample scenes that you can download here:

They need a bit of modifying but this is just so you can get the idea of how to make them. Once you've made them, you should texture a flat plane with them to save on render times.

Thanks very much for your help there Kvaalen, much apprecited.

As i'm creating a scene from world war 2, i have modelled some ruined buildings that look pretty good, but now i need to texture them, i have tried using brick textures but does not look that impressive, its a sort of weathered texture i'm after something that looks old and ruined, if anyone could give me and help or tips on this that would be great

Well there are a lot of resources on the net for textures. One place i learnt a lot of basic texturing is www.presetcentral.com Well as for your propellor to go faster you need to start at a lower setting and then go higher up. If 250 is a ok start with you then click on the E and then use the graph editor to increase the settings across the desired frames. Low blurring means slow moving,,, faster or more blurring means moving faster. But you can also increase you propellors spin rate higher to get a nice effect. Try a couple and hope you get it.
