Default Cannon Blast of light

I am workin on a canon; I have started the modeling so will post with wireframe and finished product. My question is relating to the blast:

How do achieve the effect of a continuos blast of light, like a beam of bright light with force shooting towards sky.. Please help, I promise you will like the movie when it is done.

Please go easy on me with the jargon, still a newbie.. Thank you.

hi there,,, i would go with a spot light or area light and under the properties,,, use the volumetric option.... Might add some point lights with volumetric or turn on radiousity to give me better results.... but render time will increase... so watch out. But if your scene is large and the sky is like far away,,, i would use a cylinder and texture it and use the glow option to make it glow,,,, then photoshop tweak it to get good results,,,, Or if its an animation after effects should be ok.

Hope this gives you some idea,
Kumar
