Default Video Cards - Which one...?

Hey folks!!!

I was planning on upgrading my 2nd computer system to be a good gaming computer(for Doom 3, soon to come Halo 2 possibly on the PC aswell and much more...) My current PC runs Lightwave 7 and Photoshop and is used mostly for that only, other than internet and SimplyLW.

Anyhoo, i needed a recomendation on a video card. Something thats below $200, but that'll also offer me some good power...

I was thinking about the ATI Radeon 9200SE 128mb video card (it costs around $180, would that be fine for playing some good games etc. or should i look for something else?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm... ATI do have a history of producing drivers that suck to be blunt. I'd personally look at getting the fastest nVidia card you can - excellent directX performance for games, and superb OGL for Lightwave.

I'm using an FX5900XT at the moment, and its plenty fast enough for me - although it does gobble power...

i agree with mark, try to find a nVidia card!!

i've got a geforce 5700LE myself.
i can play games like ut2k4 with al the details set to high and with a high resolution ( 1280&1024 ) very good ( around 30 to 40 frames per second )
if i set it to 1600*1200 i can sense some framedrop ( around 10 to 25 frames per second )

I think my video card is good enough to play the newest games ( didn't play doom3 yet, but im almost sure my computer can handle it )!!
i've got the geforce 5700LE for 150 euro ( not sure how much dollar that is )!!

but mark's card is just a bit better i think!! didn't see that card in action though!! its price is around 200 euro ( again, not sure how much dollar that is ).

I ran Doom III exquisetly on my ATI x800 se 128MB card ... beautiful experience thusfar...however... Nvidia does have a specific card/drivers marketed for the game, so they may have an advantage there. Plus, they seem to run most 3D applications very well.. not that I have any trouble with ATI :p
hehehe..couldn't resist giving you guys a hard time...
