Default lighting problem

what would cause this? The light causes the object to be lighter where it should be darker and darker where it should be lighter..?
Ive made sure that the geometry is good... no non-planar polys, polys aligned, etc. everything should work but doesnt... anyone know what could be the cause for this? thanks.
