Hey all!
Well here it is my first lightwave model! I followed a tutorial off of another website (Having issues with Paypal for some reason) There is a whole series of tutorials that goes along with it so I'll keep posting here as I finish the backgroud. Might as well go all the way and make an entire scene with stars, nebula, and give it better lighting! :attn: |

I recognize that from the Better Space tutorials looks very good.

Looks really good. I would like to see a few more colors in your nebula. I have always wanted to make a space scene, but I never had enough patience

Looks good.
Personally, I'd reduce the number of stars in the background and also look to applying a fade on the remaining ones based on the brightness of the nebula (maybe use the Nebula as an alpha map on top of the stars image) as generally the bright light of the nebula would overpower the stars behind it. |

Thanks for the reply guys!
I played around with the nebula in photoshop. I tried out a few tweaks on the brush and addes a little red to give it a little more color and more of a wispy look. The stars and for the geometry the nebula texture is in the same scene. So I actually pushed some of the particles behind the geometry to reduce the number visible then changed a few of the shading on the remaining stars to darken them. I hope this helps! |

This is looking really nice. I like that you added a second color to your nebula.

I like the design of your nebula Johnny.
I'm still kind of new to Photoshop so I still have a hard time getting that billowy, volumetric look to my nebulas. How did you acheive that effect? What kind of brush settings and filters did you use? |

You basically layer it up. Start with the broad base and blur it a little then add layers and use stronger colors and make them smaller and smaller and a little stronger towards the center of the cloud. The broad base is the back or rear of the cloud the stronger colors are the front of the cloud. Use the burn and dodge tool to create some hot spots. I cant remember the filters I used just play around with the filters and find one that gives you some good cloudy look. Add some Lightwave lens flairs for stars being born and your golden.
In retrospect I should have mixed in some other colors other than blue.

very nice for a first model !!!
some tips : try to add some (panel) bumpmap on the hull and give it a little specularity, so the scenelight reflects on the hull. ( ps : if you don't have a good bumpmap at hand, make a copy of the hulltexture, increase the contrast on it, and use that as a bump with same sizes as the texturemap ) |

The hull texture I used was a file that came with Lightwave. I went ahead and upped the contrast for it in photoshop and saved it as a separate bump file. I also upped the specular to 10% and left glossyness at 40%
I love it when after a few keystokes theres instant improvement. :attn: Its a definite improvement but once I start getting into creating my own textures and bumpmaps for my own models I think it will be an even better improvement than using stock files. Thanks again for the tips and comments guys! |

I love spaceships and I must say this one rocks! I love the overall design and the lighting. Maybe you can add a very faint blur to the ship to let it blend a bit to the overall composition of the scene as to not draw complete attention to it and more into the entire piece? thats just my two cents, but trust me, this is one of the better spaceship renders i've seen in awhile.
much kudos to you tavarish! |
