Really depends on what type of chain your trying to make.
But if you want a regular link chain you could create a box, and make a hole in the middle(think of a doughnut) then select the whole thing and convert to subpatches to make it smooth. stretch the sies out to make it a little more blocky while keeping it smooth. then when its done you can replicate it while rotating it. |

Hi !
Thanx for replying. I have made a box, then done a bolean substract, but when I try the subpatch it says "only faces with three or four vertices can be converted to subpatches". Tried doing with "knifing", but same msg. Am I doing something wrong ? Kind regards The Last Shida |

yes, make the hole by beveling rather than booleans.

Or goto smooth grading(or whatever its called) with a single face. And decrease its size but keep it in the same spot. then delete the middle part and select the point on the interior of the boxy doughnut like object and add poly to it. then sub patch.

you could also do what I did and create a cylinder and then band it with the bend tool (after deleteing the end poly's) then merge points...
