Default Buffers Error

Trying a very simple task-- cutting some text into a pair of doors-- should be a very simple Boolean subtract operation. I reliably get "Operation could not be completed: Internal bufers too small." I know it is not a hardware issue because I'm on a quad-core PowerMac with every bit of kit that Apple offers. How do I get around this? Any and all suggestions gratefully acknowledged..

I'm not sure about the error but you could try tripling the polygons with "shift+t" before the Boolean.
