A burned DVDs shelf life is only one day, no matter what they tell you. If you tap on the top surface it could destroy the entire DVD. They are not be trusted.

Clone HD Drives are the best.

I would agree, plus the one hit capacity of a HDD makes it much more practical also.

Cheers!

Not to mention faster, and less likely to get lost.

Thanks for good advices ! If I go for another HD for backup what is "best / safest" ? : A Maxtor Touch II type external OR another internal (much cheaper solution) ?

No maxtor.

I've had 3 Maxtors fail on me in the last 6 months. Seagate is the best.

I have three seagates, so fast. And I've never had one fail on me.

I would go internal if you can.

OK, internal is more convenient, too. But is there a point to partition it ? I'll go for a 200GB ( same as the D: of my master HD)

Agreed, steer well clear of Maxtor and Fujitsu drives - I've had three Maxtor and two Fujitsu drives fail on me over the year.

Seagate or Western Digital are about the best you can get - both fairly comparable in terms of speed and density so nothing really to choose from apart from price.

If you're using the drive purely for backup purposes, then I'd say there's no real need to partition it unless you have a real pressing need to do so.

If you want to take matters to the utmost, buy yourself a promise RAID card and get four identical drives plugged into it (stick 'em in an old PC and network to your workstation). Set the raid up as a 2x2 stripe/mirror (not sure of the RAID type - might be RAID3), so you're striping data across two spindles and also mirroring both the drives. At least that way, if one goes again, you won't be losing valuable data.
