Car modelling
I wonder has anybody "experience" with spline modelling vs poly-by-poly modelling?

i must admit ive never modelled using splines, ive modelled about 3cars in lightwave and 2 cars in cinema 4D and ive always dont it poly by poly, i just find it more suited to me.
U should do some google searches and im sure u will get some good pros and cons of both techniques |

I use splines for some things, poly by poly for others - most tend to use splines for cars (a la Philip's McLaren Tutorial) but there are still some who prefer the poly by poly method. Splines, I would tend to use for more of the hard surface type work whilst poly-by-poly I would tend to use organic- but it all boils down to what you feel most comfortable with.

i found recently that using splines to get the overall shape as one nice smooth mesh...then cutting the panels from that and poly modelling in the details worked really well for me...you have to be aware of all the seams tho so that you have an edge along them that will allow you to cut each "panel" to another layer for detailing...

I only recently started using splines, and although somewhat confusing at first, it is really usefull.
You can never get the same smoothness with polys. For more organic-like shapes, this is by far the best method ! The first parts of the Mc Claren tutorial have already given me a very good understanding of how to work with them. |
