Default Surface Names

Is it possible to delete surface names in the surface editor? I have an object with various different parts of its surface named, about 6 in total. This happened as i added more geometry to the object over time.

Now, seeing as the object is only going to be one colour, what i'd like to do is delete all the existing surface names and settings, and just apply a single surface name to the object, to make it easier to set things like transparency, as i'd only need to select a single surface.

Once you've assigned surfaces to the object, save it, close it and then reopen it. The surfaces that are no longer used by any geometry will have gone.
