Default Lightwave to Maya support group

This message goes out to all you people on the other side of the wall. Are you a Lightwave user trying to learn Maya? Are you suffering in silence?
Do you feel like a one legged man in an ass kicking contest?
I am here to say you are not alone. . Let's talk.....compare frustrations and accomplishments.
...And anyone with a handle on Maya that wants to join in please do.

Thanks
Mark

Hello, my name is polarbear53 and I have a problem.

I suffer because I can't learn, and I can't learn because I suffer.

On the upside, as soon as I master lightwave(yea like that will happen) ill look into maya because I am interested!

Kevin, dude I told you...only in PMs

I'm taking a class in Maya out at the local community dive, the teacher actually used to work at Pixar. There's allot of people in the class who never touched 3D, so it's going very slow. I know Lightwave. I have modeler, layout, and Photoshop open. I know the workflow. I'm not yet grasping Maya's workflow.
It's like driving a car and then getting into a Jumbo Jet and trying to fly it.

I guess I know what I gotta do. Barrow Ned Flanders RV, head into Shelbyville, and find that lemon tree.

well, what's holding me back is that i have the feeling that i have to learn a new package from scratch....
it's the same with Softimage|Xsi. the two packages have awesome animation stuff in it.....but to learn a whole new package for that?!....pffew. i hate the way of modeling in Maya (maybe because i'm used to do it the LW-way) but i like the openGL speed of Maya very much....no matter what u do....it runs smooth. and to be honest, the character-animation stuff in LW is terrible, but in Maya it is the best
.......so, all in all.....i'm VERY interested.....but a little shaky....:|
btw, credits for your initiative m8!

hmmm, lot of txt....."talking loud,..."LOL

ow!...what's your plan anyway?....take us by the hand and guide us step-by-step??
something like a LW-to-Maya-switch tutorials maybe??? i think that would make it a little easier for LW-ers

Looking around at jobs in the 3D industry, most want Maya experience, so I guess that's why I'm taking the class.
The bottom line is if you make a demo real that kicks ass, show's acting and animating ability, no matter what you made it in, you'll get hierd....or at least an interview.
I have a short animation project for the class. I guess if it comes out the way I see it in my head, I'll post it.

Maya's whole Hypershade and texturing deal is throwing me for a loop right now, but I agree on the OpenGL.
I wish Maya had a knife tool.
The beveling in Maya seems to be not as good as Lightwave also.
uh...man I gotta get some sleep, before I

From my experience, familiarity of one application will help getting familiar with another. I'm currently using both Maya and Max at work, and steadily learning more about Max as I use it.

well, that's partialy true. ok, you know what most of the terms mean. but there are also a lot of new terms and that takes a new
approach of working with it. (like nurbs, isoparms)
plus you have learn a whole new interface and its shortcuts.
but, i'm open for learning Maya because, again, the character-animation stuff is superieur to LW.
