Default Hardware vs. Software rendering!!!??

Is lightwave gonna get hardware a hardware renderer anytime soon? Maya has one. Is hardware any faster than software? I know the difference between the two. With graphics cards becoming increasingly faster and more general purpose with shaders and such( i have read an article on a graphics card that could be made into real time ray tracing with a some work a little faster graphics cards). So which is better and when/will will lightwave get one?
