Default Moddeling A Robot

Hey fellas i want to model this robot I have been sketching over the last couple of day and I have no idea where to start. The robot looks like one of the robots from the game HEAVY GEAR 2. I was wondering if I should model it using Polygon modeling or should I use sub patches also is there any tutorials that could aid me in this.

Sorry I would post a pick but my scanner has broken down.

I think it will depend on how organic looking your robot is. The Heavy Gear 2 robots look very mech-like to me. So my first stop would be to go find some mech meshes and see how other people have approached it. LWG has a few worth looking at:
