Default rigging a snake

hey all

I'm fairly new to rigging objects but thought a snake sounded easyenough...

well i stuck about 8 child bones down it and then had a play in layout, it bends correctly but in 8 stages, so i get an articulated snake! Is the answer to stick in more bones (ie, real skeleton) or is there an easier/better way?

thx
