Default toy start

hey i started on this scene for the toy challenge. its a chess set with a toy robot. if you've seen the picture i'd entered in the war of the worlds challenge you'd noticed that this is the same object. i was trying to focus on the chess set and try rendering with some blur. but i can't see to get the blur to work propally so any advice in welcome.
