Hi! I have a question regarding how I should setup large scenes. I have a fairly large scene to setup roughly the size of a city block my poly count is in the range of 60k....
I would like to add realistic landscaping to this scene but the trees add so many poly's per tree that I get an out of memory error when trying to render. How do I need to go about adding foliage to make it look realistic? Would it help if I duplicate the tree in the scene rather than in the actual model. Does this make sense? |

maybe you should model the trees that are close at the camera. and use planar maps for trees that are further away!!
or you should put some extra memory into your computer ;-) |

You could also get the hd_Instance plugin if you're simply instancing the same geometry for your trees...
Try: http://www.happy-digital.com/ |

This project will be animated and the camera will be moving around the scene enough that all the trees will need to be realistic.
I currently have 1 gig of memory and will be purchasing one more in the future. hd_instance is looking good, thanks for the lead may end up with that... any others like that out there? |

Well you can always cheat out. That is to say that you make it appear as though you have a tree from a distance, while actually using less polygons. You can do that by doing things like simulating several leeves or entire sides of a tree with a single textured polygon. But I recommend using variation on the detail depending on how close the camera comes to the objects in question. The idea is to eliminate polygons where ever possible by using textures to emulate depth, thus lowering the number of polygons, or even removing entire sides of objects that the camera doesn't see. It's okay to cheat like that because if done right, no one will know the difference.
Hope this helps someone out. Last edited by Tuki; 08-02-2005 at 08:53 PM. |
