Default Creating/Extruding text

I'm not sure I've felt so frustrated or stupid. All I want to do is create some text and extrude it so it can be used in a boolean operation. I'm in LW 5.5 No book or tutorial matches what happens on my screen.

I need keystroke-by-keystroke handholding. Tell me how to create a number 7 which is an actual object, extrude it into typical logo thickness. All efforts so far are a complete mess. Someone take pity on a dufus! Thanks,

Warren Shore

It has been a long time since I have used 5.5 so I hopefully I am not telling you something it can't do.

Use the text tool to make your 7.

Use the Extrude tool to extend the back out and make it 3D. If one of the faces (back or front) are not solid, use the mirror tool to double it up into one solid model. size it from the top to taste.
