Default modelling mechs, robots and other technical gadgets

I am really into learning how to model robots, mechs and various techy robot and automated things. Does anyone have any tut links? I have been looking around this site and found one in the max forums and I think maya. But I would like to start with lightwave since it is the one I have a license for but I could get a trial of the other 2 if need be. Not sure which is the best to start off with. Lightwave, Maya or Max.

That would be a good tutorial idea for here. Something techie like a robot would be cool.

I personally cant speak for Max or Maya never used them. What I would do is get a trail version and try them out see how they feel for you. LW is very user friendly, and you can always apply modeling and 3d knowledge from LW to other packages.
