Default Getting the most out of forums

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I see this stuff about smart code and all these other bells and whistles one is supposedly capable of at most forums, including this one. And I am wondering if there are any sites or documentation about how to actually use the features.

Is there?

In my defence though, I am kinda looking for things that are a little more howto. With examples or something. For instance, I am not unfamiliar with php but I have no clue how it would be used in a forum post (besides a poll).
