Question Strange poly showing up

I'm modeling a classical guitar for my final project in my 3D class and I came up on a snag. I don't know what this little thing is.

I created this with a spline around the permiter and tracing a reference image. I only did half though. Then I extruded and beveled the edges. I then cut out half the whole with a boolean and mirrored with the Mirror R to L plugin. I merged points a few times through the process.

If I delete that poly and click on the 4 verts surrounding it and hit p to create a 4 sided poly it makes the same thing. Anyone know what could be causeing this?

Heres a larger image of the body so far.

The Points of those polys aren't selected the right way. Delete them, select the points clowise and press p.

I tried that already. It deletes it and then just makes the same poly.

And you definitely only have the four points selected around the hole? Check the info window at the bottom left of Modeller where it says 'Sel:'.

If not, post the object file here so someone can take a look at it.

that one point not connected is actually 2 points. I welded it and its fine now.

But that leads me to this

What is the difference between merging and welding, because I couldnt merge the 2, just weld.

When you merge the points must share the exact same position. The points must have been seperated slightly. Welding merges two points but they dont have to be in the exact same spot.
