Default First Spaceship Project ~ WIP

I finally broke my mental block on a spaceship idea thats been flying around in my head.

The idea is a medium sized ship (about 30M) similar in form to Jupiter2 from Lost in space. I want the hull to have a semi-organic carapace look like the scales on a turtle or snake's head.

Its a leisure/observation craft with a window running the full front of the ship (a la flash gordon 1980)

Here are some concept plan sketches.

In oder to make the multi-shell look. I created the basic form then killed the polys. I am now in the process of remapping the hull in a more organic format using the original points. once i get the shells, I'll swell them and fill in the furrows. Still thinking how to deal with that window

Anyone have any tips on the best way to organise a model in layers/parts to make it more manageable?

At first I thought it would be too, but It goes pretty quickly. It also allows me to backtrack easily.
