Default Robotic Parts

i have an question about robotic parts of an character!!! for example: if you wanna make an robotic hand, does the hand need to consist of different parts/objects?? with other words: do i have to need to weld all the objects to one big object?? or must i make the hand into different parts?? because i think when you are create one big object, the objects are bending, when animated!!! and robotic parts dont may to bend because its metal!!!

if you dont understand this, look the attachment!!

thanks for reading this hope you understand it!! otherwise tell me, and i will try to explaine it better
