Default Sheet Lightning

Hi every1, i'm sure there is someone who can help me here with my ickle project, im a noob (thought i'd better say before i start).

I've followed a nice tut on creating a stormy ocean scene, i'm now adding some objects to the scene to give it a purpose, one of the features i'd like to add is sheet lightning and i was wondering if people could give me some ideas on how i could go about this.

All would would be most appreciated

Or for basic sheet lighting, use a distant light and ramp it up over the course of a frame or two from 0% to 150% and back down(you can also crank the ambient settings up at the same time to wash out the entire scene)
