Default starting Lightwave

I was wondering what is the best way to jump right in and learn Lightwave. Is it to download and do a whole bunch of tutorials or what. If anyone has any tips I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

A good start would be to go get one of the books on Lightwave 3D. That helps a lot. It starts off with the ultimate basics, then goes into the complex parts...

Going through tutorials is a good idea. What it'll do is give you some familiarity with the basic tools that you will use and then you can start creating stuff of your own. Don't expect to learn every single tool all at once - there's still tools out there that I haven't explored yet, and I've been using Lightwave for ages. But with tutorials, you'll get to know the core tools and learn what kind of things are best for what jobs. Download a few of the free ones here and see how you get on.

The recommended book is Dan Ablan's "Inside Lightwave X" where X is the version of Lightwave you're currently using.

And don't be afraid to ask questions either. This place is noob friendly. If you're stuck on how to do something - just ask. I'm sure one of us can point you in the right general direction.

Most of all, have fun with your work.

At the moment I had bought a copy of Lightwave 5.6 to start off with. If I liked it and enjoyed working with it I would either upgrade or pick up the latest version. I have worked with the major graphic and design software for years and my dream has always been to try animation.

Thanks

You're missing out on a few tools with version 5.6 but it shouldn't stop you from cranking out some good models. I think the Lightwave book of choice at that stage was the Lightwave Power Guide or just Inside Lightwave 3D. I'm sure you can pick these up cheap somewhere. Amazon seems to have copies for a few dollars second-hand.

... there's usually some copies of these books floating around on eBay too - hell you might even be able to pick up a whole LW bundle for next to nothing
