I'm seriously thinking about doing some freelance work and I wonder if anyone here knows how it works and how to get started and so forth...

Ok, this is how i got stuff rolling for me.I come from tech line... But dabbed in training and multimedia and design.But i started slowing incorperating 3D into my work,, and letting people see some of my embaressing attempts. Then after some time. Small stuff started coming my way.Guess its all about just letting the people around you know that you dabb in 3D.I used to email my friends and collegues... Personal and fun stuff in 3D,,, just to grab their attention.Sometimes its a real drag to quit work and concerntrate in 3D to get a reel up... So this is how i did it.
As far as freelance jobs,, there is bound to be a thousand and one changes,,, so render out in frames!!! :p Always helps to discuss the terms before starting on one,, cause you might never know when they are feeling you are not the one,, and put you away for someone else. Cheat as much as you can,,, if you dont need to model it,, dont. As long as the final image sells. Oh ya,, dont start loving the look of a character or something,,, that will kill you when someone says scrap this one,, i need something totally different. I'm not cheating much. everytime i model something i also model the things you don't actually see in the final render. i know this is some extra work. but i just want to have the idea it is there. sounds crazy i know!
the biggest problem i have though is keeping the motivation to work on something. sorry,it's a little bit offtopic. may i ask?? how much can you ask if someone ask you to make, let's say, a 3d human, textured and all? just interesting how expensive that is. *had a hard time typing this in correct english language, hope you will understand* |

pricing is a big problem when your new in the biz.. atleast was/is for me.. I think I sold out way too cheap on all commercial stuff Ive done.. :o but on the other hand.. its not my day job so..

Ok never really sold a human.. Came close to it,, a pig,, and a 2d flash character yoda. Hmm,, i should say pricing is flexible, and depends on you and also the buyer. So you can bargain. But if its the first model you want to sell,, then i should say quit the bargaining and start doing. Will help you in the long run.
Ok, the pig was scrapped so never really generate much, so i am not disclosing... But the 2d character was about.. US 200. |

thanx Matt!...have I seen any of your commercial stuff? I know...bullet_evader...I do that sometimes to, because you might not know what part of the model you will see on the render Thanx for the replies guys...

Hmm,, worked on him a bit,,, especially for the different head turns, expression,,, not easy as he is so wrinkled. I would say a good 4 days works.

Remember that pricing is relative to what you are doing as well. 2D illustration is not going to get the same rate as 3D animation. The biggest mistake new people do is underprice their time either because they don't know the going rates or they think it will help them get a foot in the door. Rarely does lowering rates pay off in the long run. Once you drop your rates for a client, they will always expect that rate. If you work 4 days on something (8 hours a day) and get $200 you are working for $6.25/hr before taxes. If I put 32 hours into a project, someone would be getting a $3,200 invoice.
In the US, remember that about 40% of your billing is going to taxes. You can deduct your equipment, software, SLW points, etc BUT only if you have are declaring office space. |
