May/June-Norm-priimate
Howdy All! Signed up here at SLW the other day and saw this month's comp details and thought i'd give it a go! After thinking about it a bit, i'm gonna attempt a chompy little Angler fish - here's a bit of concept of what i'm gonna be aiming at - cartoony style all the way!

Hi All! Well, i've spent a couple of hours pushin' points and i'm kinda gettin' there... I haven't modelled a fish before and i'm not entirely convinced with the mesh at the moment, might spend some time spinning quads and see if that settles the niggling feeling. Any C+C welcomed and much appreciated!

Hey there and welcome to the forum!
I like your concept a lot. Its simple and yet very distinct which is always a great combo in my book! I think it will translate beautifully into 3D. Nice start so far. I would suggest that once you're satisfied with the overall shape and volume you concentrate heavily on the edge flow around the mouth. I think this model is gonna be a head turner! Dave |

Cheers for the feed back swankymonkey! Yeah I agree, the geometry around the mouth is lacking big-time - I haven't made up my mind if i'm only gonna use it as a static model, or rig it for animation, so I might just tweak it for now!
Cheers! priimate. Here's where i'm at, at the moment!: |

Great concept and design. Would love to see the teeth a bit more sinister looking, but maybe you'll add that later though.

Hi odeone! Yeah, the teeth need work! I initially wanted to steer clear of more realistic, needle-like, teeth and opted for a more "big'n'chompy" feel, but after quickly throwing them together I think they are somewhat lacking. Now I think that steering back towards that "needley" look might add a bit more oomph! to the overall feel. I kinda want to go for a slightly crazy, unhinged look, rather than sinister (hence the chunkier teeth)!
Here's a bit more progress: Cheers! priimate. |

Coming along very nicely. Finding Nemo could have done with this character.
It would be great to see this animated priimate. Look forward too more updates.. |

Hey mate,
Looks superb, I was contemplating entering this comp and doing an angler, but now yours is up, im glad I didn't The teeth look much better now, the splayed out appearance does wonders for the 'unhinged' look you're going for! Looking forward to seeing it completed |

Thanks very much for the feedback Everyone! I'm doing a bit of scene composition at the moment, while thinking of anything else to add to the fish! More wips soon (hopefully!)

that looks really cool priimate! I was hoping someone would do an angler fish... I was just wondering whether he has only one eye or two on both sides

Hi Zeeman! Yeah, he's got two eyes! The angle he's on makes the other one a little hard to see! Here's a roto-mesh so you can see the whole thing! If you're not a fan of carnival rides don't watch this too long (I did and got a bit queasy)!!!
Cheers! priimate. |
