Default Area Volumetric

Hey!

I have just finished modelling a brass desk lamp...

(click images to enlarge, and maximize pop up browser window)

...and now I want to add some volumetric lighting coming from it.

If I use spot, it creates a circle of light. Obviously I need an area flooding down that matching the end of the hood.

Is there a way of doing this??

Any help appreciated.

[UPDATE]

okay......I'm slowly solving this problem although it's definately no straight forward, and has taken a bit of time so far.

Below is a non AA image that I have so far....

I will post all my findings and results when I'm done.

what about making a flat plane with a square cut in it and make a big volumetric spotlight that fills the whole square hole. And have it(the spotlight) shine through the hole to make a square volumetric?

Not sure about that either.

Because of the lums it would take to make that work, the render times would go way up, and residual light would bleed into the scene so losing some control over lighting.

I solved the problem in the end, not bloody easy, lol.

And here is the result after a little playing, but no AA.

I still have to tweak it, but it's almost there.

If anyone wants to know how to do this I'll write a tutorial once I've finished completely.
