Hey All!
A newbie here looking for some constructive crits. This is a character from a Stephen King novel. It's described as a robot with a mask of a wolf, and looks like Dr. Doom. Am kind of going for the aged, rusted metal look for the skin. Any suggestions for aging the fabric? Please crit, will attach a wire if requested. |

Here's a couple more with better lighting. This is a 4-point light rig...

Looking pretty good so far - I like the whole wolf-like Dr.Doom theme you have going on.
The modelling seems okay to me - the only possible thing that I may change is to give the hood a bit of depth as it looks extremely thin right now. As for textures, I applaud the rust look but for me, it looks a bit random - take a look at this image created by Leigh Van Der Byl as a sort of template http://blog.stung.org/archives/image...our_rusted.jpg |

Thanks for the reference Fallen. Van der Byl is a MASTER!
Probably a bit advanced for this newbie. I agree with you though. It seems to look more like splattered mud or something instead of rust. The style in my head has some theory behind the look but it doesn't really translate to the screen. Maybe it needs more color and less random, more larger/bumpier spots. Thanks for noticing the hood, I had some points crossed. Funny how you look at something for so long then you don't really SEE it anymore. ![]() Have to un-plug once-in-a-while I guess. Wow, just one reply (thanks Fallen)... I must really suck and no one has the heart to tell me.
Anyway, if anyone's interested here's some more images. The texturing will get another attempt I think, but I wanted to rig him and pose him some. |

And here's his teeth. So... should I call the last year of practice and training (with excellent videos from this site included!) a wasted effort and keep my day job? Worked on this character for about 3 weeks or so (after my day job of course).

It takes a long time to get seriously good at CG although after only a year, I think you're doing very well. Certainly not a wasted effort and yes, character modelling does take a long time so don't feel disheartened by it.

good work ! In a pose it all comes alive....
The only thing I don't like about it is the bumpmap, it looks a bit fake, maybe it's just too deep, I don't know.... anyway it's a lot better than any character I have build so far..... Which reminds me that I need to make a character for the comp...yikes !!!!:mg: |

Hi TowerFan,
Nice to see another Dark Tower fan going creative ![]() I think that you have done a great job, especialy as you are so new to 3D. In my opinion, less is more, so if the lighting were darker and the textures subtle, I feel that the character would be more sinster in apearence. The shoulder area kind of looks like it has been modeled to look the way it is deformed when rigged, if you catch what I mean. I'd personaly make the limbs thinner and with more visual cues about the Wolf being a robot. I think that the head in the Novel was actualy some kind of strange plastic and not metal, but it's your model ![]() Would be ace to see him throwing one of those Phantasm/Harry Potter balls ![]() Hope this helped. Thanks all for your support. Thanks for the suggestions as well. I agree with you all on the textures and I'm not happy with them, so I'll give it another go in a while. Come back to it with a fresh perspective.
Dave - I was wondering how long it would take for someone to get it. If the Lord of the Rings was considered unfilmable, then the Dark Tower will never make it to the big screen. Figured I'd just have to do it myself! (I'll never be so bold as to compare myself to Jackson though!) I have a storyboarded idea for about a 3 minute short where Jake faces down a charging mounted Wolf, complete with sneetches and "fire-sticks"! BTW - TheDarkTower.net has a cool Fan Art section. Some good, some bad, some ugly. It's worth a look! I can't draw and I had no real reference so I kind of winged it and found that scaling different parts of a model is difficult. Must plan ahead, eh? Thanks again All! |
