Just bought my first 30 points and am finding the tutes less than useful as they have no sound-- am I missing something? Also, I though buying points gave me VIP status, but I'm not finding this to be the case--

Yes, I have the standalone DivX installed and running the Fishy tute consistently causes it to crash upon opening. Suggestions?

Are you running the latest version of the DivX codec? Crashes with playing videos is usually down to running older versions of the software.

You may also want to check your video drivers. Another point to note is that I've found that my current XP64 build crashes whenever I try to play back video using Media Player (especially DVD content - causes my PC to Blue Screen) - but has only recently started doing so (so could either be the last lot of updates from MS or could be my nVidia drivers) - although DVD content plays back fine in other applications (so my money is on an MS update).

Although, having said all that ... the fishy tute runs fine for me in WMP.

I'm running a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.5.3. Quicktime Pro is updated to the latest version (7.5.5) and I have only today downloaded the current DivX codec, which so far as I can tell, is accessible by all applications once installed (ie there are no separate versions for Quicktime, VLC, NicePlayer etc.) The website claims it enables DivX playback from within Quicktime.
When I playback using Quicktime or any other app, I get picture with no sound . When I choose "Open with DivX Player," Fishy tute and Basic Human Form (Maya) cause immediate crashes without exception. Some have suggested that installing FinalCut Studio may be to blame but I have removed and reinstalled Quicktime to no avail:headbang:

Also try VLC player, it seems to work with everything out there.

Nope, the avi crashes both VLC and VLC PPC (0,8,4 and 0.8.5). I've had some luck converting the files to .mov but the sound, while there, is unintelligible. Is this normal? What could stop Quicktime from playing DivX?!

I really don't know enough about Macs and the OSX architecture to help troubleshoot (despite having a Mac myself :headbang: )

However, I'll see if I can check out on my mac tonight if I can replicate this at all.

Its possible that the newest releases of DivX and/or QT may have introduced some incompatibilities (although saying that, if this were a general case then I'd expect to have heard much more about it by now).

I'll also see if I can determine the exact codec version that the video was encoded with - perhaps using that version (or one from around that release cycle) may help alleviate the problems??

OK, I've just tried part one of the Fishy tute on my mac and it plays just fine - this is using OSX5.5 on a G4 Mac with DivX 2.2 and Quicktime 7.5.5 installed.

So, I'm afraid it looks as though it is definitely something peculiar to your Mac. As to what it could be ... someone more aufait with Macs will need to answer I'm afraid...

Dont give up Reuben. The tutorials here are probably the best there is. Can't help you with your problem because I use Windows, though I have found that in the past, having multiple players can have adverse effects on some of the tutorials.
