un-rendered polygons?
did a test render on a chess set im making. first i noticed that some squares from the board didnt even get rendered. what happened there? then i noticed the pawns are hoovering above the board. why are my squares missing, and is there something like a "snap-to" command like photoshop has? I dont really wanna go in and move every pawn.
a little button called "gravity" would be awesome. just click it and every thing falls into place. |

Ok, so....for the pawns first. IF you are in modeler you can just hit F3 to drop to floor which is usually the y=0 plane. There is also a function in layout called Gravity that lets you select the direction of the force, the frames when it's active and also the nature of the oject (rubber-bounce led-bounce-less kinda ) but it has to be added for every single object so it's probably the best idea to select each pawn in modeler and hit F3. As for the squares not rendering... do you by any chance have two plane objects there? The chess board and another plane? If that's the case than maybe you need to move the chess board up a bit or the plane down so they don't superimpoze or something, not sure how to explain better...

the board is the only planar object. i made in by making a 1x1 square and making 7 clones on one axis, selected the row of 8 and cloned 7 of those on the other axis. then i manually selected every other square and hit "q" and named one set 'black' and one set 'white'. does it have anything to do with the way i did it?

that was a lot of work....
why didn't you just made a plane and textured it using the checker board procedural? Then just change the size of the texure to get the perfect result...

fixed the problem with the board. got rid of the 64 polygon thing and replaced it with 4 squares and added an image map to it. looking good so far. this is going to be one of the few things that i finish. just need to figure out the knight now. any tips?

nice, good job.
As for the knight this is going to be such a cheat but I took the horse head from Poser, loosed a few polys cause there were a lot to loose and imported it into moedler where I built a base for it. The end Or you could build your own little stallion (see Shrek II : "I'm a stallion!"). From what I tried if you find a nice horse profile you could make it a backdrop and roughly trace the edges using splines then add a big block of what ever, subdivide it so you have something to cut and.... yes, the suspense is killing us all.....cut it using whatever method you like ,preferably something to leave you with a good profile so I made a poly out of the spline then smooth shifted it so I have another block, then I used boolen and et it to intersect. But you're free to do it your way . If people are going to comment, may I add that my chess set has a very 'flat' horsey so this method worked perfectly. Anyway.... hope it helps, at least so you know what not do to
