Default rag torch flame

whats the best way to reproduce a rag torch flame(as used in the hunt for frankenstein,the orignal--no elertrics to be had).
it's for a still image,no motion

In the lord of the rings, on the blarog, they use sprites and attached a video texture of fire, or somthing like that, if your going for real fire look.

I wouldn't know how to do the alpha texture of that though.
