It depends on the situation. When you are using subpatch it is important to use 3 and 4 point polys because 5+ point polys will not subpatch correctly. Now in LW V9 you will have CatMullClark subpatching available and that fixes that problem. With CMC subpatching you can as many many point polygons and still subpatch correctly. For video games its important to use 3 point polygons so they render correctly because 3 point polygons cannot be non plainer. So in different situations its important to use 3 or 4 or 5+ point polygons.

so if I read you correctly, if my work is for video/film as opposed to games, and I use ver 9 (I pre-ordered but am not beta testing right now) it should not matter?
one thing I found frustrating at this site, is that I use ver 8.5 right now, at least until 9 ships, but almost all the tut's I have downloaded are using 7.5 I wanted to use the cloth dynamic with a charactar I am working on right now, but when I looked at the cloth tut, it was not using the dynamic because it did not exist for 7.5. :headbang: are there plans to put up ver 9 tut's and maybe at least labeling the tut's so that we can know what version they are for? |

Hi MJ
even though LW9 will subpatch 5point poly's and beyond, it is always best to work withing the 4point rule to keep you mesh as clean as possible. Working with the 5's and beyond can cause some interesting deformations when it comes to render time I say plot a course with 4 point poly's and keep to it as best you can and use the 5 pointer's only in extreme circumstances. Just remember that if you wanna use models for a portfolio piece and the employer want's to see the mesh.... a clean 4 point poly mesh will look sweet and uber clean..probably helps the render calculation at some point too .

that makes sence. I just wanted to make sure that the 'stray' 3 pt and 5pt polys won't be a major issue.
anyone know about the idea of seperating the tut's into version? what tut's for version 8 are good? I just don't want to waste money on tut's on 7.5 and older
