Default Converting files

Quick question:

I have a number of Lightwave 5 files that don't seem to want to open in Lightwave 7 - is there a converter available or am I doing something really stupidly wrong?

Many thanks for any help!

5 was before my time... I don't know of an exporter either.
But as far as I know they should open in LW 7 just fine.
Is it model files or scenes?

Hi Philip

Thanks for getting back to me so fast! These are models I've gotten hold of - they're from an old Japanese resource. They are .lwo files but they just don't want to seem to open in Lightwave 7. I know that sometimes you get problems because of weird Japanese filenames but in this case, that isn't at fault. I think I might have a copy of Lightwave 5 floating around at work somewhere - might be time to try and dust it off and see if they work under that.

Thanks again!

you could try to open them in Rhino if you have access to it...

(I believe they still have a downloadable demo on www.rhino3d.com)

Okay, now I'm feeling daft - it appears that they don't even open in Lightwave 5.5. It seems it isn't a version problem as I first thought. I think it might be an anti-piracy device where I might need a certain plug-in installed before I can open the objects. The only problem is with the instructions in Japanese, I can't for the life of me figure them out. I'll get there in the end.

Again, Philip, thanks for your patience and help!

Ha ha - finally got it. The files are provided with a plug-in for Layout so that they can be loaded from there and only loaded from there. (The plug-in doesn't work in modeller) I think they did it this way as an anti-piracy measure and to stop you meddling with the files in modeller. I can appreciate this. But I finally figured it all out.

Many thanks again, Philip!
